APPLE
The Moulin Touchais 1985 Coteaux du Layon smells alluringly of baked apple, apple jelly, pink pineapple, and heady flowers. Lusciously rich on the palate, yet not lacking cut or clarity, it carries honey, baked apple and grapefruit into a long, rich, if not rivetingly complex finish. Heaven knows I would be delighted for the opportunity to sip a glass of either of these in a restaurant, whether as aperitif, with foie gras, or in lieu of dessert.

♦ Official Tasting Note
Smells almost fortified, like a white Maury or Banyuls. Apples, oranges, cloves and even a hint of salinity. Immensely rich and powerful (13.9% abv). Powerfully sweet, too, with flavours of toffee apple and lime oil. To be honest, the acidity is hidden beneath that enormously rich, sweet structure, but I think it will emerge in time. A massive wine, which I suspect needs another 20 to 30 years to really get into its stride.
The Coteaux du Layon MOULIN TOUCHAIS is unlike any other. Whatever its vintage, MOULIN TOUCHAIS expresses a particular grace, made of tension and minerality, accompanied by an extraordinary aromatic palette, mixing flowers, stewed fruits and candied fruits and spices. Each vintage ages slowly and keeps for decades this harmonious blend of sweetness and freshness that gives them their inimitable charm.Grape variety: Chenin Blanc, also called Pineau de la Loire.Terroir : Clay and limestone of the communes of Tigné, Martigné-Briand and Maligné
